Many of the conditions that affect Bernese Mountain Dogs have a genetic component. While no breeder can eliminate every health risk, health testing allows us to make informed breeding decisions and avoid pairing dogs that may be more likely to pass on inherited problems.
By combining PennHIP, OFA evaluations, genetic testing, Histio scoring we ensure that the dogs we are breeding are of the highest standards. Combine those standards with our conformation evaluations, longevity research, pedigree analysis and importing for diversity we are able to produce puppies with the strongest possible foundation for a healthy future. See the link below for the reasons behind the diversity needs.
At Daybreak Acres, we believe that raising exceptional puppies involves much more than providing excellent health care and nutrition. The first eight weeks of a puppy’s life are a critical period of development that can have a lasting impact on confidence, resilience, and adaptability throughout adulthood.
That is why we incorporate many of the principles of Puppy Culture®, a structured, science-based puppy development program designed to provide puppies with positive early experiences during their most important developmental stages.
To support puppies during their earliest weeks, Daybreak Acres invests in both neonatal care and long-term health planning. In the whelping area, we use a Puppy Warmer system to provide a consistent, safe source of warmth that helps newborns regulate body temperature during the critical first days of life. We also place significant emphasis on hip dysplasia prevention through comprehensive health testing, pedigree research, and careful breeding decisions designed to reduce inherited risk factors. Together, these investments reflect our commitment to giving puppies the strongest possible start and supporting their health and well-being throughout life.
Our puppies are introduced to age-appropriate enrichment activities, new surfaces, sounds, scents, and gentle challenges that encourage curiosity and problem-solving. Through careful handling and positive socialization, they learn that the world is a safe and interesting place to explore.
We also focus on building confidence through thoughtful exposure to everyday experiences, helping puppies develop the ability to recover from new or unexpected situations. Early puppy development also helps prepare puppies for a successful transition to their new homes. Through age-appropriate crate training, positive grooming experiences, and gentle exposure to everyday routines, puppies begin building confidence and resilience before they leave. These foundations can reduce anxiety, ease adjustment periods, and encourage lifelong comfort with handling, grooming, and crate time. Every puppy receives individualized attention and enrichment designed to support their physical, emotional, and behavioral development, giving them the very best start in life.
These early experiences help prepare them for successful transitions into their new homes and provide a strong foundation for future training. These early positive reinforcements set the puppy up for success to understand their relationship with people. We encourage our families to continue good experience practices by encouraging them to complete the good canine citizen award achievement. This is so important to us that we even offer an incentive for completion!
Combined with our commitment to health testing, temperament evaluation, and individualized puppy placement, our goal is to raise Bernese Mountain Dogs that are not only beautiful and healthy, but also confident, adaptable, and well-prepared to become cherished members of their families.

At Daybreak Acres, responsible breeding involves more than passing health tests. While OFA, PennHIP, and genetic screening are essential parts of my program, they are only one piece of the puzzle.
Research in Bernese Mountain Dogs has shown that maintaining genetic diversity is an important component of long-term breed health and longevity. While DNA testing helps identify specific inherited conditions, genetic diversity helps preserve the broader gene pool that supports overall vitality, reproductive health, and resilience within the breed.
For this reason, I carefully evaluate each breeding using a combination of health testing, temperament assessments, structural evaluations, pedigree analysis, and genetic diversity considerations. I also prioritize thoughtfully selected bloodlines, including imported pedigrees, to help maintain a healthy and sustainable future for the breed.
My goal is not simply to produce beautiful Bernese Mountain Dogs, but to preserve the qualities that make this breed so special while contributing to its long-term health and well-being for generations to come.
This commitment to health, temperament, structure, and genetic diversity helps me thoughtfully match each puppy with the family that is right for them and supports the future of the Bernese Mountain Dog breed.

At Daybreak Acres, improving orthopedic health is one of our highest priorities.
Hip dysplasia is a complex condition influenced by both genetics and environmental factors during growth and development. While responsible breeding begins with carefully selected parents, research suggests that early puppy development may also play an important role in lifelong joint health.
Every Daybreak Acres breeding dog undergoes extensive health screening, including:
These tools help us make informed breeding decisions aimed at improving the health and soundness of future generations.
Our puppies are raised on specialized traction flooring designed to provide secure footing from birth.
Research from the Institute of Canine Biology has demonstrated that puppies raised on high-traction surfaces are often able to stand and move earlier than puppies raised on traditional whelping box surfaces. Proper footing encourages normal movement patterns and helps puppies support their bodies through their limbs rather than sliding or bearing weight on their chests.
As puppies grow, maintaining good traction may help support healthy musculoskeletal development during a critical period of growth.
Daybreak Acres participates in an ongoing hip dysplasia and puppy development project that explores the relationship between genetics, environment, movement, growth, and orthopedic health.
This research examines factors such as:
The goal is to better understand how breeders can combine responsible genetic selection with evidence-based puppy raising practices to improve the health of future generations.
As puppies mature and begin spending time away from the whelping area, they are introduced to Kuranda® elevated dog beds.
Kuranda beds provide a firm, supportive resting surface that keeps puppies elevated off the floor while promoting cleanliness and comfort. Unlike soft bedding that can bunch, compress, or create uneven surfaces, elevated beds provide consistent support
across the entire body.
Introducing puppies to raised beds at an early age also helps them develop confidence, coordination, and body awareness as they learn to climb on and off independently. These experiences encourage balance, mobility, and problem-solving skills during an
important stage of development.
In addition, Kuranda beds help puppies learn appropriate resting habits and often make the transition to crate training and household life easier for their future families.
At Daybreak Acres, we incorporate Kuranda beds as part of our commitment to raising confident, resilient puppies in an environment that supports both physical development and lifelong success.
There is no single test, supplement, or management practice that can eliminate hip dysplasia. Meaningful progress comes from combining generations of thoughtful breeding decisions with continued learning and research.
At Daybreak Acres, we are committed to utilizing the best information available today while supporting ongoing research that may benefit Bernese Mountain Dogs for years to come.
